The tail looks shrimpy, layers are popping out like woah, and one side just completely fell out. For a style so low-maintenence, side braids tend to come with some annoying side effects. Here, six pro fixes for the most common offenders:
1. The nonbraided side is loose and wonky—and not in a sexy, cool-girl way.Try this trick from hairstylist Mara Roszak: Gather all the hair to one side, but before you start braiding, grab the pieces that keep falling out and twist them across your neck, pinning as you go. Once those are secure, start your braid.
2. Your hair is silky and smooth. Usually this isn't a bad thing, but when it comes to braids, it can make them fall apart. To fix it, coat your hair—from midlength to ends—with texturizing spray. This gives the hair some grip so the hair sticks together, and not out of your braid.
3. You're dealing with bangs. Emma Stone has full-on blunt bangs in the photo above. The reason you can't see them is because of this trick from Roszak: Spritz your bangs with water, twist them back off your face, and clip them in place. Mist them with hair spray and let them air-dry while you finish your braid. When you're finished, take out the clips and your bangs should stay off to the side. If they don't, slide in a couple of bobby pins.
4. You have short or thin hair. It sounds counterintuitive, but you should actually braid quite tightly. That increases the number of rotations, which makes the braid look longer and bulkier, says hairstylist Matt Fugate. When you're finished, beef up the braid by massaging it with your fingers. Don't pull it apart, which loosens short, spiky pieces. Which leads us to our next point....
5. Layers are popping out all over the place. Push the piece back into the braid and blast it with hair spray. If it still won't stay, hook a one-inch bobby pin through the layer, sliding it up and down through the braid in one motion.
6. You can't braid to the ends. Here's the thing: You actually shouldn't. If you braid all the way to the bitter ends, where your hair is dry and thin, the braid will also look dry and thin. Instead, tie off the braid when you've got two to four inches left to go and flatiron the ends for a polished finish.
6. Your hair tie falls out by noon. The fat hair tie you keep around your wrist? That's not the right kind of hair tie for this. Every hairstylist we know uses small Blax elastics, but any small plastic elastic will work.
