Way back in January 2009, Taylor Swift was gearing up to do her very first Allurecover—wearing her very first red lipstick. "I'm excited about doing red
lips—I've never done them before," she told makeup artist Gucci Westman. Gasp. Yep, it's true: Allure and Westman inspired the singer to embrace what is now her signature look. Tay-Tay left that shoot with a tube of the vibrant color she wore on our cover and then repeatedly showed up on the red carpet with crimson lips. By a 2010 interview, Taylor was preaching the lipstick's powers, saying that red "really helps you show emotion." Today, the classic look is so much a part of her persona that it's not only featured on the cover of her album 1989, it's in the lyrics....

In the YouTube-leaked "Blank Space" (the leak was rapidly stopped up), she sings, "Cherry lips/ Crystal skies/ I could show you incredible things." The lip color makes it in to the chorus of two other songs: The club-ready technofest "Style" ("You got that James Dean day dream look in your eye/ And I got that red lip classic thing that you like") and the breathy, romantic "Wildest Dreams" ("Say you'll remember me/ Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sun set babe/ Red lips and rosy cheeks"). Three mentions! That's some look loyalty.
What do you think of Taylor's red-lip obsession (and of the superpop-y 1989)?
